Geta Inheritance: A Modern Take on Japanese Cultural Heritage

A Unique Handbag Design by Jingwen Zhang

The Geta Inheritance collection draws inspiration from the centuries-old Japanese geta culture, representing the preservation of indigenous traditions and beliefs.

In the early years, clogs were invented during China's Tang Dynasty and later introduced to Japan, where they have been embraced and passed down through generations. Even in contemporary Japan, people continue to incorporate geta into their daily lives. The Geta Inheritance collection symbolizes a country's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage.

What sets this handbag design apart is its fusion of traditional Japanese culture with a modern and minimalist aesthetic. The collection reflects the essence of Japanese belief in cultural heritage, capturing the soul of a nation.

The Geta Inheritance handbags are crafted using wood treatment techniques, veg-tan leather treatment, leather coating and dyeing, pigskin lining, and fabric pattern design with digital printing. The use of wood not only pays homage to the original geta but also adds a unique touch to the design. The bags measure 11' 3/4'' * 8' * 3' inches, making them practical for everyday use.

Jingwen Zhang embarked on this design project in April 2017, completing it within a month. The research behind the collection delved into the cultural heritage of both China and Japan, exploring the development and inheritance of the geta culture. Zhang discovered that while clogs faded into obscurity in China, they thrived in Japan due to the country's deep-rooted connection with its cultural elements. This study highlights the significance of fashion as a representation of a country's development, politics, economy, culture, and identity.

The design challenges for the Geta Inheritance collection centered around the wood construction and connection methods. Creating a hollow structure was crucial to reduce the weight of the bags, making them easier to carry. Additionally, the designer incorporated digitally printed fabric, showcasing a pattern of their own design.

The Geta Inheritance collection received the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Fashion and Travel Accessories Design category in 2018. This recognition is bestowed upon well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The collection's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contributes to a better world.

In a rapidly changing society, the Geta Inheritance collection serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving national culture and heritage while embracing economic and modern advancements. By wearing these handbags, individuals can express their awareness and appreciation for the rich cultural tapestry that defines Japan.
